Upon completion of this activity, the learner should be to:

1.Create a differential diagnosis for pathology in the oral and maxillofacial region and use a systematic approach, incorporating a focused history and physical examination, imaging studies, laboratory tests, and tissue sampling, to come to a correct diagnosis.
2.Describe the advantages and shortcomings of various adjunctive diagnostic modalities.
3.Develop a framework for understanding the biology of oral cancer to be used as a basis for understanding new research and adapting this knowledge to the diagnosis and treatment of oral cancer patients.
4.Develop a framework for understanding current molecular techniques to be used as a basis for understanding further developments as these techniques evolve.
5.Describe how oral pre-malignant lesions are diagnosed and managed, the pitfalls of current understanding and techniques, and how one would counsel a patient about the management of their disease.
6.Differentiate the clinical and radiographic workup of cysts of the jaws and neck, including those that require an incisional biopsy and those cysts that may be excised without first performing an incisional biopsy.
7.Define the nomenclature associated with odontogenic and non-odontogenic cysts of the jaws.
8.Review the pertinent anatomy of the major salivary glands and it relevance when considering excision for salivary glands tumors.
9.Review the management most common benign and malignant salivary gland tumors of the head and neck.
